Pat and I started on our road trip across America this morning.

We set a fairly easy first day as we booked into the Skagit Casino Hotel  south of Bellingham Washington which is only about an hour south of the border.  As we were arriving at 2:30 I was thinking that this was not a great idea as we had lots of sunlight to burn, but then came to realize that this is a holiday not a trek.

First thing that made this a good idea was we have a great king size bed in a mini suite that is new with all the bells and whistles and it only costs $79.  We could have stayed at a beat up Super 8 for $99.

Went down to the casino where Pat won $88  in her first few minutes on the slot machines so she cashed out as this would easily pay for the dinner. (actually not quite as I felt we were taking advantage of the casino so we spent the next hour trying to lose my original $20 bet)

During the second period of the hockey game we went down to the grill where we each had a great prime rib dinner with a bottle of wine and still had $20 left over.

I think we are going to look for casino hotels on the rest of our route.

Back to the room to watch the third period with Vancouver scoring in the last 18 seconds.

Altogether a great first day.    Tomorrow on to Leavenworth which is only about 3 hours away so again an easy day.  Longer days coming when we drive across the plains so we do not regret the more scenic days in the Mountains
